Adv. Ivor Heyman

Adv. Ivor Heyman is an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa with a multidisciplinary background spanning litigation, mediation, human rights, and nonprofit leadership. His career reflects over two decades of experience navigating complex disputes and promoting constructive conflict resolution across diverse sectors and jurisdictions.

Ivor has completed over 140 hours of formal mediation training, including a 64-hour accredited Family Law Mediation course with the Mediation Academy (South Africa), as well as advanced coursework with Mediate-Tech and the Northern Virginia Mediation Service (Washington, DC). He has mediated more than 50 statutory and court-referred cases via the Office of Human Rights (Washington, DC), primarily in employment, housing, and education matters.

As an independent advocate, Ivor’s practice focuses on commercial litigation, delictual matters, and advisory work, where he is regularly instructed to draft complex legal opinions, pleadings, and heads of argument. His approach integrates rigorous legal analysis with the practical insight gained from years of facilitating dialogue in sensitive, high-stakes environments.

Before returning to legal practice, Ivor served for over 16 years as Executive Director of the Center for Nonprofit Learning in Washington, DC — a nonprofit organisation he founded to equip NGOs with strategic management and conflict resolution tools. In this role, he designed and delivered nationwide training, led mentoring programmes, and advised nonprofits through periods of organisational transition.

His earlier experience includes positions as Economic Policy Associate at Friends of the Earth (Washington, DC), Associate at Troutman Sanders LLP (Washington, DC), and Articled Clerk and Associate at Routledge Modise Moss-Morris (Johannesburg), where he gained broad exposure to corporate, environmental, and commercial law.

Ivor holds an LL.M. in Corporate, Finance & Securities Law from Duke University, an LL.B. and B.A. in Political Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand, and is admitted to practice law in South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

He is an Accredited High Court Mediator (ADR International Register, Netherlands) and continues to serve the community through pro bono mediation at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, assisting families and individuals in conflict.
