Jana van der Merwe
Jana van der Merwe is an accomplished advocate and conveyancer with more than 18 years of experience in the legal profession. She was admitted as an attorney and conveyancer in 2006 and as an advocate in 2011. She is a member in good standing of both the Pretoria and Johannesburg Society of Advocates, and currently practises from Maisels Chambers in Johannesburg and Groenkloof Chambers in Pretoria.
Her practice covers a wide range of fields, including commercial and corporate law, banking and financial services law, insolvency, family law, medical negligence, property and municipal law, insurance law, administrative law, and town-planning and development law. She also has extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution and serves as a panel member of the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA).
Jana holds a BCom Law and LLB from the University of Pretoria, as well as postgraduate qualifications including the AIPSA Diploma in Insolvency Law (2009) and the AFSA Diploma in Arbitration (2023). She is further pursuing professional development through the Aspirant Women Judges Programme (2025) and a mediation certification with the University of Cape Town.
Before joining the Bar, she held senior legal roles at Investec Private Bank, where she gained significant expertise in legal recoveries, risk management, and litigation. She began her career as an attorney and conveyancer at Newtons Inc., where she also headed the debt collection department for Standard Bank.
