Shirley Munro-Flint
I am a South African attorney with more than 30 years’ experience in private practice. I was admitted as an attorney in August 1995 and established my own practice immediately thereafter, where I have remained.
My professional journey began in healthcare. After matriculating, I trained in nursing attending at BG Alexander College of Nursing. I later entered the pharmaceutical industry as a sales representative and completed studies in marketing. These early experiences gave me a practical understanding of people, organisations, healthcare and the workplace before I pursued a career in law.
I obtained my BProc, LLB and LLM degrees through UNISA, and a Diploma in Human Rights through the University of Johannesburg. Although I have practised across a broad range of legal fields, my work became increasingly focused on employment and labour law.
Alternative dispute resolution has also formed an important part of my professional development. I completed AFSA mediation and arbitration training in 1998 and arbitration training presented by John Brand in 2001, and I was previously appointed to the AFSA and Tokiso panels. More recently, I completed a 65-hour accredited general mediation programme through ADR Network South Africa, as well as advanced training in land rights and Land Court mediation.
I believe that legal practitioners must continue learning. Professional development includes a POPIA course through the University of Cape Town, together with ongoing study in employment law, human rights, mediation and dispute resolution. I am on the ADR Network South Africa Panel.
Outside the law, I have a lifelong love of all animals particularly horses and am a former equestrian competitor.
